Tongariro to Taihape

After a substantial fish and chips and yesterday's meteorological onslaught, sleep came quickly last night, with only some brief midnight clatterings to look at the stars.
The sun was back out, blasting at us on full power as we prepared to wave goodbye to the volcanos.  It seemed so hot I raided my bag again for a second layer of factor 30.

What a cruel trick mother nature played! 10miles along, into the unrelenting headwind the drizzle started and the temperature dropped.
The next 20miles made me think of a cartoon where the character has a raincloud over his head, that just follows him wherever he travels. Just as I seemed to spot blue on the horizon we'd veer off, the law of sod in full effect.
It didn't feel as mentally hard as yesterday though. NZ must be toughening up southern fair weather cyclists.

The weather here is remarkable, as just when you're feeling it's the depths of winter a few kilometres on it's tropical heat. This cold spell is apparently unusual!
The lumpy ground was strange today, humps everywhere. Perhaps they are made by the earth moving about here so often. Donna assured me later I didn't want to experience an earthquake, not even a little one.
The day ended on a high as by 1pm the sun had re-instated itself so we could sail down to Taihape. It's an odd little town that was half shut as it's Sunday and I'll remember as the town where I saw Phil have his last meal (if his poor body survives the night with that monster size mixed grill in it, it'll be a miracle!)
63miles today.
